what can be said about new york city that hasn’t already been said through cheugy pop lyrics, tshirt slogans, and early 2000s rom coms? before moving here some of the classics ran through my head:
“its the city that never sleeps”
“it’ll chew you up and spit you back out and then run you over with a bus”
“its where you’ll experience your highest highs and lowest lows”
“if you can make it there, you can make it anywhere”
etc, etc, etc.
having lived here for a month, the thing i’ve learned to do the best is constant adaptation and improv. say more stuff here, list crazy examples
in this month’s edition we conducted research on artist-run galleries and collectives, talking to individuals taking fate into their own hands and surviving the new york art scene. we also interviewed a musician who also happens to be taking acting improv classes, the head chef of the refettorio harlem (new york’s only free restaurant), and more.
